A ScienceMONTGOMERY Fair project is an independent science activity using a variety of skills, many of which you will teach yourself as you go along.  You will develop your own ideas to investigate a scientific problem or question that interests you.  In March, at ScienceMONTGOMERY, you will display your project and talk to professional scientists about it.  Several 9-12th grade projects will be sent to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), in May.

Once you have selected a topic for your project, in an area of science in which you have some particular interest, experience or resources available to you, you should complete your project, following the Scientific Method.  The Scientific Method has the following steps:

  • definition of the problem or question for which you are testing along with a hypotheses, your educated guess about the results you expect,
  • deciding how you will gather information
  • conduct the experiment, the procedures you decided would test your hypothesis
  • analyzing the results of conclusions of your work.

In planning your project, you should become familiar with the ScienceMONTGOMERY rules and forms.  For the most part, ScienceMONTGOMERY follows the rules of the Intel ISEF as part of our affiliation with this prestigious event. Both Intel ISEF Rules, registration Forms and ScienceMONTGOMERY Guidelines can be accessed through the link below.  All students and their parents/guardians MUST sign and date Approval Form 1B before starting any experimentation.

If you are entering a team project (no more than 3 students), you should read about the special rules that apply to all team projects.

Before you can register for the fair you should determine in which of the 7 scientific categories your project belongs.

Registration for the Fair includes completion of the online registration process.  After you have registered online, you must compile and complete your application.  The application consists of several forms, all of which must be submitted by the registration deadline in February.   A document to guide you through the steps of registration is included below and as a drop down tab under Students:  How To Register.

  • Friday evening March 16, 4 to 9 PM   Project Set-Up  Projects are to be set up at the College Park, University of Maryland, Armory Building.  A safety inspection will take place at that time and all safety rules for your display must be resolved at this time, to qualify to participate in ScienceMONTGOMERY. For those students for whom this timing conflicts with religious observances, special arrangement can be made to set up projects earlier.

You can view the safety inspection form ahead of time so that you know what the requirements are.

Students must remain at their project until there is an announcement that judging is over to be eligible for all awards.  Students whose religious observances prevent attending on Saturday, (only) may leave a 10 minute DVD of their presentation.   You may bring some water to drink during judging.  No food is allowed at the exhibits during this time.  NO PARENTS, MENTORS, FRIENDS, SIBLINGS, OR TEACHERS ARE ALLOWED IN THE EXHIBIT AREA DURING JUDGING.
